The area of Nauru is 21 sq. miles.

Nauru was first claimed by Germany for its phosphate, and split with Germany. but in 1914 is was seized by Australian troops. the League of Nations settled the dispute by allowing Australia a share of the island profits.
The island received its wealth from the large quantity of phosphate it has to offer.
Shortly after gaining complete control of their own island and the phosphate, Nauruans became independent in 1968. Their first president was Hammer DeRoburt.
Nauru was one of the riches countries in the 70's due to their export of phosphate.
According to the UN greenhouse effect study in 1989, Nauru was though tot be completely under water during the 21 century. however, today Nauru still rises over the water.
In 2001 Australia paid Nauru to house refugees wanting to live in Australia. A detention center on the island currently houses around 1000 men.
Nauru has been in a financial and political crisis sine 2004 due to their large amount of debt.
Due to an immense debt to a U.S. cooperation, the island sold a lot of their assets to Australia.
In 2003, the detention center residents went on hunger strike.
Nauru's current president, Sprent Dabwido, rose quickly to power due to his oppositions lack of confidence vote by the the Pacific island's 18-member single-chamber parliament.

The major religion is Christianity, mainly Catholicism.
